Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center

Bamboo Crafts of Beppu received a Japanese government designation as an official Traditional Arts and Craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. During the Muromachi Era, the marketplace for bamboo craftwork flourished with the manufacturing of baskets for strolling vendors. Bamboo craftsmanship was soon established as the local industry in Beppu during the Edo Era. Today, Beppu Bamboo Craftsmanship produces flower vases, objet d’art, and artistic handcraft items that are highly esteemed for its elegance and sophisticated artistic qualities. This market continues to grow across the globe. Information on the history and techniques of bamboo craftsmanship can be found at the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Museum where an elaborate display of works by world-renown master artisans is exhibited.
