Syaru Shirley Lin, PhD, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. Previously, Lin was a partner at Goldman Sachs, where she led the firm’s efforts in private equity and venture capital in Asia. She also spearheaded the firm’s investments in many technology startups and was a founding board member of Alibaba Group and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation.
“I am honored to be a member of the board of directors of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation,” said Lin. “Focused ultrasound has the potential to impact millions of lives and treat an ever-increasing list of diseases and conditions. To foster further progress, research sites and manufacturers in Asia need to engage with their counterparts around the world, and philanthropists and investors should follow the development of this cutting-edge technology. To help achieve this, I hope to leverage my experience in finance and understanding of Asia on behalf of the Foundation.”
Lin currently serves on the board of Goldman Sachs Asia Bank, Langham Hospitality Investments and Mercuries Life Insurance. She was appointed by the Hong Kong government to the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation, and she is an adviser to Crestview Partners. Lin is an authority on the privatization of state-owned enterprises in mainland China, Singapore and Taiwan.
“For the past five years, Shirley has been integral to the Foundation as a member of the Council,” said chairman of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation Neal F. Kassell, MD. “Joining our Board further enables Shirley to use her experience in finance to advance the field of focused ultrasound, as it evolves from research to clinical adoption and achieves commercial success. Shirley will also play a crucial role in increasing the Foundation’s involvement with the vibrant focused ultrasound community in Asia, including our relations with research sites, manufacturers, investors and philanthropists.”
In addition to her economic policy and investment roles, Lin is an adjunct professor and member of the founding faculty of the master’s program in global political economy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She also teaches at the University of Virginia, Tsinghua University in Beijing and National Chengchi University in Taipei.
Lin graduated cum laude from University of Virginia and earned her master’s and PhD from the department of politics and public administration at the University of Hong Kong.
