NEW YORK, July 31, 2018 — Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), a branch of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, is proud to present a special exhibition, Found in Translation, in special collaboration with Stigma & Cognition New York (S&C New York) in celebration of International Literacy Day 2018. The exhibit will be on view from August 16th, 2018 to September 10th, 2018 with the Opening Reception on Thursday, August 16th from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Found in Translation focuses on shedding light on the concept of literacy and translation, more specifically, on the cultural similarities and differences between Korean and Western countries via the use of language through typography and art. 19 Korean and 19 American/Western artists, both renowned and up-and-coming, have created typographic artworks that are based on expressions that the two cultures share in common.

Korean and English may not seem to bear much resemblance, but the two languages have a point of convergence. For instance, the English expression, “The grass is always greener on the other side,” finds its partner in the Korean expression, “Another’s rice cake always looks bigger than your own.”

At the exhibition, an English work created by an American/Western artist and a Korean work created by a Korean artist are displayed in pairs to create a juxtaposition that is both visual and semantic. Through this juxtaposition, we celebrate the differences and similarities between two cultures and languages.

In addition, a pair of artists have been specially commissioned to create a set of works inspired by the progress for peace and harmony on the Korean peninsula, specifically in commemoration of the historical inter-Korean summit that took place earlier this year.
