During New York City Climate Week, Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr and New York City Mayor Eric Adams unveiled “Hertz Electrifies New York City,” a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors aimed at boosting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and extending the environmental and economic advantages of electrification to various neighborhoods.
Under this initiative, Hertz plans to incorporate up to 1,700 electric rental vehicles into its local fleet, generate 100 new jobs to serve its expanding presence in New York, and collaborate with four public high schools to provide EV education and training opportunities for students. Additionally, the partnership includes Hertz’s donation of five EVs from its fleet to support hands-on training programs for future auto technicians at New York City schools.
Stephen Scherr, Chair and CEO of Hertz, emphasized the company’s commitment to creating the largest EV rental fleet in North America. He also highlighted New York City’s role as a hub for technological innovation and stated that Hertz is excited to partner with Mayor Adams during Climate Week to make electric driving more accessible in the city while investing in its workforce.
Mayor Adams’ efforts to make the city’s vehicles more sustainable and transition the city fleet to electric vehicles align with the “Hertz Electrifies New York City” initiative. The city is also setting new standards, aiming to make rideshare vehicle companies completely zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible by 2030 and encouraging electric driving throughout the city.
Mayor Eric Adams underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving these goals and stated that this partnership with Hertz will make more EVs accessible to New Yorkers. He emphasized the role of education and workforce development in preparing youth for the green economy of the future.
As part of the initiative, Hertz is collaborating with and donating electric vehicles to four New York City high schools: A-Tech High School in Brooklyn, Thomas Edison Career and Technical Education High School in Queens, Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx, and Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School on Staten Island.
Additionally, Hertz is providing telematic insights from its connected car fleet to assist the city in planning additional public charging infrastructure across all neighborhoods through its Hertz Charging Opportunity Index.
New York City is actively working to reduce transportation emissions, aiming to cut them in half by 2030 and achieve net-zero transportation emissions by 2050. These efforts include promoting walking, biking, public transit, and electric driving while ensuring accessibility to electric vehicle charging hubs and supporting the electrification of freight vehicles.
The partnership with bp will see the launch of bp pulse fast charging hubs in New York City, starting with midtown Manhattan, equipped with ultra-fast chargers of 150kW+ designed to serve Hertz customers, taxi and rideshare drivers, and the public.
New York City is the fifth and largest city to collaborate with Hertz through the “Hertz Electrifies” initiative, which aims to accelerate EV adoption and bring environmental and economic benefits to communities across the United States.
