Introducing the Next Era of Campus Commuting: Evolve E-Bike Share Launches at SFU’s Burnaby Campus

Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus has introduced a swift new mode of transportation: e-bikes! Thirty Evolve E-Bikes are now accessible 24/7 on Burnaby Mountain. These electric pedal-assist bicycles are strategically stationed at nine designated parking zones across campus, making it convenient for students, staff, and visitors to navigate. From student residences to the UniverCity neighborhood, these zones ensure easy access.

Created by BCAA, Evolve E-Bike Share operates alongside the renowned Evo Car Share program already established at SFU since 2016. With the Evo App, users can now locate the nearest e-bike, reserve it, and explore the campus and its surroundings. Rides must commence and conclude at approved Evolve parking zones, adhering to bike lanes and paved paths.

Martin Pochurko, SFU’s VP of Finance and Administration, expressed enthusiasm for the sustainable addition: “I’m thrilled by the addition of e-bikes to our Burnaby campus ahead of the fall semester. I can’t wait to see another environmentally friendly way to get across campus.” He emphasized the importance of sustainable transportation options to enhance the campus community’s quality of life.

This initiative supplements existing campus transportation options like the shuttle service, offering a greener alternative. Students in residence can now reach a grocery store in just three minutes, compared to a 15-minute walk.

Each e-bike comes with a complimentary helmet, access to safety information, riding tips, and advice on the app and website. The pricing structure offers flexibility, with rates of $0.35 per minute or $12.99 per hour, plus a $1.25 unlocking fee per trip. Frequent riders can subscribe for $9.99 per month, reducing the rate to $0.10 per minute.

Leanne Buhler, Senior Manager of Strategic Ventures at BCAA, highlighted the program’s significance: “This program marks our commitment to both present and future generations, and we’re actively seeking more public opportunities across the region to extend this positive impact.”

Safety measures are in place; e-bikes are programmed to limit speed to 25 km/h, and certain areas like the Academic Quadrangle courtyard and Convocation Mall are designated no-riding zones. These zones are clearly marked in the Evo App, ensuring user safety.

Notably, this electric bike share program aligns with SFU’s sustainable transportation goals. The university aims to reduce emissions by 25% from 2019 levels, encompassing greenhouse gases generated by commuting.

Besides SFU, Evolve operates a public e-bike share in Whistler and private programs for businesses and groups in Metro Vancouver, Victoria, and Whistler. About BCAA, the British Columbia Automobile Association, serves as a purpose-driven organization dedicated to providing protection and mobility solutions, offering trusted insurance, car services, roadside assistance, and more to over a million Members in BC. BCAA’s commitment to safety and community betterment resonates throughout the province.
